Image-Schemata-Based Spatial Inferences: The Container-Surface Algebra

چکیده
Algebras over spatial relations have become an important aspect of spatial reasoning for retrieving and handling large and complex spatial data sets. While such spatial relations play a fundamental role in specifying constraints in a spatial query language, there has been little concern as to whether existing spatial-relation algebras are cognitively plausible. In order to construct more intuitive and easier-to-use spatial query languages, this work pursues an alternative approach to spatial reasoning based on a small set of operators that derive cognitively plausible spatial relations. The work focuses on a set of operators that are associated with the behavior of image schemata— recurrent patterns that people learn through bodily experiences and use to assign meaning to objects and situations. A study of a small-scale space, involving the surface and container schemata, describes objects in this space and the possible spatial relations among them. The informal description is then translated into a formal algebraic specification and generalized for spatial relations in a scene that involves surface and container schemata. This formalization axiomatizes spatial inferences that are then applied and compared to a larger geographic space. As a result, a small set of spatial operators were defined for smalland large-scale spaces; however, these operators show discrepancies when applied to a combination of objects belonging to different scales. It is expected that this study can be useful in exploring new theories for the design of query languages of future geographic information systems.

A Comparison of Inferences about Containers and Surfaces in Small-Scale and Large-Scale Spaces
Inference mechanisms about spatial relations constitute an important aspect of spatial reasoning as they allow users to derive unknown spatial information from a set of known spatial relations. When formalized in the form of algebras, spatial-relation inferences represent a mathematically sound definition of the behavior of spatial relations, which can be used to specify constraints in spatial ...
متن کاملFormal specification of image schemata - a step towards interoperability in geographic information systems
The formal specification of spatial objects and spatial relations is at the core of geographic data exchange and interoperability for geographic information systems (GIS). It is necessary that the representation of such objects and relations comes close to how people use them in their everyday lives, i.e., that these specifications are built upon elements of human spatial cognition. Image schem...
متن کاملRelation algebras over containers and surfaces: An ontological study of a room space
Recent research in geographic information systems has been concerned with the construction of algebras to make inferences about spatial relations by embedding spatial relations within a space in which decisions about compositions are derived geometrically. We pursue an alternative approach by studying spatial relations and their inferences in a concrete spatial scenario, a room space that conta...
متن کاملHyperspectral Images Classification by Combination of Spatial Features Based on Local Surface Fitting and Spectral Features
Hyperspectral sensors are important tools in monitoring the phenomena of the Earth due to the acquisition of a large number of spectral bands. Hyperspectral image classification is one of the most important fields of hyperspectral data processing, and so far there have been many attempts to increase its accuracy. Spatial features are important due to their ability to increase classification acc...
متن کاملMeaningfulness of Religious Language in the Light of Conceptual Metaphorical Use of Image Schema: A Cognitive Semantic Approach
According to modern religious studies, religions are rooted in certain metaphorical representations, so they are metaphorical in nature. This article aims to show, first, how conceptual metaphors employ image schemas to make our language meaningful, and then to assert that image-schematic structure of religious expressions, by which religious metaphors conceptualize abstract meanings, is the ba...
